Long Son International Port: A New Logistics Infrastructure and Transportation Hub in Ba Ria - Vung Tau – A Year in Review

Exactly one year ago, on January 16, 2024, Long Son International Port welcomed its first container vessel, carrying nearly 400 TEUs of domestic goods. This marked the inauguration of maritime transport connections to Long Son Island from major ports across the country, a historic milestone that established Long Son International Port on the map of Vietnam's seaports. It also solidified the seamless integration of nationwide logistics and transport routes to Long Son, Cai Mep – Ba Ria-Vung Tau, extending its reach across the southeastern and Mekong Delta provinces.

As a young port, Long Son International faced numerous challenges, including limitations in equipment, infrastructure, navigation channels, and a new market. However, with the dedicated efforts of its staff, support from various government authorities, and strong partnerships with stakeholders and customers, the port quickly stabilized operations.

In 2024, the port safely handled 901 ship and barge arrivals, completing the loading and unloading of 285,155 TEUs of import and export goods. This corresponds to a total throughput of 1.8 million tons of cargo. The port achieved revenue of 180 billion VND, contributed 897 million VND to the state budget, and created nearly 200 jobs.

Additionally, the port successfully launched a standard warehouse with an area of 50,000m² and implemented a variety of yard services, such as container stuffing and unstuffing for automobiles, PTI services, cold chain handling, and Ship-to-Barge transshipment of international containers destined for Europe and the U.S. The port also facilitated the transshipment of raw materials from northern ports to Cambodia and southeastern and Mekong Delta provinces.

These achievements are a source of immense pride for such a young port. They would not have been possible without the support and encouragement of government authorities, particularly local leaders and regulatory agencies, as well as the trust and cooperation of partners, customers, and the dedicated efforts of the port’s staff.

Long Son International Port remains committed to contributing to the development of the transportation and logistics sectors in Ba Ria - Vung Tau province and Vietnam as a whole.
Given the limitations of transportation, navigation channels, and market conditions, Long Son Port, during the first phase of its investment project, has identified its primary customer segment as domestic maritime transport services. It is the first and only port in Ba Ria - Vung Tau province to offer dedicated weekly domestic container shipping routes and serve as a nationwide logistics transshipment hub.

The port also acts as a central dispatch center for vehicles and service quality control, enhancing its ability to provide optimized services and smart solutions for domestic customers in the southern region. Since operations began, many new transport methods and innovative ideas have been implemented across the system.

In 2025, Long Son International Port aims to receive more than 1,000 ships and reach 2.5 million tons of cargo.

With the ambition of further unlocking the port’s potential, in 2025, Long Son Port aims to handle over 1,000 vessel arrivals and achieve a cargo throughput of 2.5 million tons. The port also plans to introduce new value-added services and solutions for its customers. Additionally, 2025 will be a pivotal year for the second phase of the port’s investment projects. Feasibility studies and development plans for a new state-of-the-art warehouse, projected to cover 30,000–70,000m² of multi-purpose space, will be advanced. The port will complete 450 meters of coastal embankment, office buildings, and procedures for extending the berth by 620 meters, bringing the total berth length to 810 meters. This expansion will allow the port to accommodate 5–6 ships with capacities of 10,000–20,000 DWT simultaneously.

These developments will serve as a foundation for transforming the port into a true international seaport capable of receiving ocean-going vessels and fulfilling its full range of functions. Although these goals are challenging, they are critical for achieving the port’s vision.
